BANNANA

Lets Talk on BANANA

Wonderfully sweet with firm and creamy flesh, bananas come prepackaged in their own yellow jackets and are available for harvest throughout the year.

The banana plant grows 10 to 26 feet and belongs to the Musaceae family of plants along with plantains.

The cluster of fruits contain anywhere from 50 to 150 bananas with individual fruits grouped in bunches, known as "hands," containing 10 to 25 bananas.

Dont be lazy, Mannastores can help you.

Laziness will always almost guarantee the failure of God’s children. God is not weak, and He is not unwilling to bless us, but one of the reasons we do not experience the supernatural as a body is because of the lack of prayers. There is no excuse strong enough to justify a prayer-less life.

Four elements contribute to the success of a movie at the box-office. They include good script, experienced director, professional publicist, and most importantly, the big name stars.

Of all the four, there is one a producer should never violate at the market place and that is the ‘star’ aspect of it. There could be a bad script, inexperienced director and not too good publicity for the movie but it is almost impossible to have Return On Investment (ROI) with un-bankable stars.
Wikipedia defines a bankable star to be an actor famous or charismatic enough to be “capable of guaranteeing box-office success simply by showing up in a movie”. It is common knowledge that a Will Smith will sell any movie no matter how bad as long as he has his face on the jacket.
In Nigeria, some movie stars have proven again and again that they can guarantee return on investment as long as their faces adorn the poster. They are Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Omoni Oboli, Funke Akindele and Nse Ikpe-Etim. Or how else could one explain the success of box office hits like Mirror Boy, Ije, and Tango With Me all having Genevieve Nnaji starring in them? And what about Figurine and Anchor Baby which both starred Omoni Oboli as the lead actress?
Mirror Boy, Tango With Me, Last Flight to Abuja and Phone Swap all had sizeable negative reviews, yet they topped the box office, made huge profit and left many Hollywood movies far behind. Here, The Entertainer takes a look at Nollywood’s five bankable actresses, their earnings and what is possibly working for them.

Genevieve Nnaji

Topping the list of five is Genevieve Nnaji. Love or hate her, Genny as she is fondly called, has a way with cinema audiences that make them come back again and again for her movies.

So far, Genevieve’s starring in the movies has grossed over N83 million at the box office. Mirror Boy (described by the actress as her first major film and the first to put her at the box-office) made N18 million, while Ije netted N60 million turning out to be Nigeria’s highest grossing movie ever. But Genevieve had to share the money with Omotola, who also acted alongside her. If the sharing formula is 50-50, then Genevieve gets N30 million of the total gross.

Genevieve’s next movie, Tango with Me went on to make N35 million. So, putting all the figures together, Genny remains at the head of the pack. What seem to be working for Genevieve are her enduring power, popularity and social media connection. The actress has been there for over a decade and is still waxing stronger. Her wine seems to taste better with age.

Another plus for Genny is her popularity. Genevieve is hugely popular across Africa and most especially among the youths. Before now, she has been very active on the social media especially Twitter. She even had to put up a Facebook advert after reports emerged that some acts were ahead of her there.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde

Next on the list is Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde with box-office gross of N60 million. She made N24 million with Last Flight to Abuja, N6 million from Private Storm and her N30 million share in Ije bring her total earning to N60 million.

This year alone, no actress has made as much as N24 million from a single movie; Funke Akindele would have done so with The Return of Jenifa but the movie hit the box office in 2011.

Omotola, who was reported to have been paid N5 million by Tarila Thompson all in the bid to make his movie a blockbuster, has been described as the biggest box office actress of 2012. She recorded successes back to back but it remains to be seen if she can pull off the box office magic again with Amina and other movies coming in 2013.

Omotola has been an A-list actress even before Genevieve got her first big break and so what has been working for her is the wise investment in her brand. Her enduring presence and unceasing contact with her fans via the social media has made her popular even in an environment where a mother of four like her is not fashionable.

Funke Akindele

Surprisingly, the third person on the list is Funke Akindele, a young lady who rose to fame in I Need To Know, a TV series, and went on to earn a monstrous fame with Jenifa.

Funke is an unlikely candidate on this list. Now, how can one explain that she is third on a list parading heavy weights like Omoni Oboli, Nse Ikpe-Etim and Stephanie Okereke among others?

So far, Funke has made over N56 million, netting over N20 million in 2012 alone. In The Return of Jenifa, Funke netted N35 million. The movie ran till February 2012. Her movie, Married but Living Single made N9.9 million while Maami made N11 million. The actress is on her way to another cinema glory with a movie, A Wish. Let’s hope she will be able to wave the magical wand again and create a box-office success.

For Funke who recently got married, the plus factor for her is her huge popularity among the masses and elites. Her movie, Jenifa cuts across all social groups with the street parlance in it becoming the mode of communication in social gathering. And as an icing on the cake, Funke has moved upscale, she is now the toast of events organized by the rich and not so rich. Her box office credibility transcends the cinema as all DVDs parading her face turn into gold.

Omoni Oboli

Omoni Oboli, who is still largely unknown to those who don’t patronise the cinema and social media, is fourth on the list. She is a silent achiever. Before the trio of Genevieve, Omotola and Funke even dreamt of hitting the box office, Omoni Oboli already took the lead. Figurine, her first box office appearance made N13 million while her second effort, Anchor Baby made N18 million bringing her total earning to N31million.

Omoni’s strength is her exclusivity and knack for quality. It is a known fact that if the project is not big and ambitious, Omoni might not do it. The disadvantage of that is, despite her box office credibility, Omoni is still unknown in areas where there is no access to cinemas. Perhaps, that is the reason she tries to make up with the red carpet presence.

For now, the exclusivity is working for Omoni; perhaps her new movie, Broken and other works will introduce a new twist. One other thing that should not be forgotten is the unprecedented publicity of Anchor Baby in 2010. The film also had Omoni at the forefront of meeting and greeting of fans at the cinemas.

Nse Ikpe-Etim

The fifth slot belongs to Nse Ikpe-Etim. She seems to be the latest sensation in big budget movies. In Mr and Mrs, Nse was a delight, her performance was a reference point and it was a hook that kept drawing people to the cinema while the movie was there.

Mr and Mrs made N6 million while another of her film, Phone Swap made N20 million, making a total of N26 million.

Too early for Nse to cement her place, as she hasn’t done N15 million back-to-back but one thing the actress has made clear is that she has intention of doing that. The leading four acts should be afraid of Nse because her strength lies in her pure acting talent.

Nse is born to act, deemed to be unnecessarily assertive a times, but you can’t accuse her of not knowing her lines. And she pushes her movies with virgour, moving from one cinema to the other.

However, Nse should watch it as many have accused her of being too ‘self-conscious’, a term casually used for budding stars who have ‘over-hyped’ impression of themselves as this could alienate fans who make the box-office count.

Rita Dominic and Stephanie Okereke

Rita Dominic and Stephanie Okereke should readily make the list but they haven’t appeared at the cinemas more than once. Hopefully, Rita will break into the list with The Meeting, Lion of 76 and Street of Calabar while Stephanie already had N10 million under her belt with Through the Glass.

Of course, there are exceptions to the rules. A bankable star makes easier the job of a producer; the absence of one, however, is not a ready-made doom for a movie as Avatar and Slumdog Millionaire (both global box office hits) have shown. But if one would take a risk or err, it’s better to err on the part of caution.

Five rebel governors join APC

rebel govs
The New Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday formally announced that it had merged with the opposition All Progressives Congress.
The decision  was taken at a  meeting  between   leaders  of the APC and the New PDP   at  the Kano State  Governor’s residence  in Abuja.
The  National Chairman of the New PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje, announced the decision  which was described by the Presidency as a welcome development.
“The Presidency does not feel threatened; the PDP does not feel threatened,” the Special Adviser to   President  Goodluck Jonathan on Political Matters, Mr. Ahmed Gulak, told  State House correspondents in Abuja.
But the New PDP  said its members, including the rebel governors, were elated to “have abandoned PDP’s sinking ship.”
Although Baraje claimed that the group’s merger  with the APC  was a unanimous decision,  two  of the seven  rebel governors – Babangida Aliyu (Niger) and Sule Lamido(Jigawa), distanced themselves from it.
Governor Aliyu Wamakko(Sokoto) and Lamido  were absent from the  Tuesday meeting.
One of our correspondents reported that Aliyu attended the meeting but left before it ended.
The    other  rebel  governors   in attendance  were  Rotimi Amaechi(Rivers);  Rabiu Kwakwanso (Kano);  Murtala Nyako(Adamawa);  and Abdulfatah Ahmed(Kwara).
The  leaders  of the New PDP  that attended  the meeting were  a former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola,    Dr.  Sam Jaja, ex-governor of old Abia State, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu;  and a former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipriye Sylva.
The   APC  team comprised  Chief Bisi  Akande; a former Head of State, Maj.- Gen. Muhammadu Buhari;  a former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu;  and an ex- Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mallam Aminu Masari.
Like Aliyu,  Buhari left before the meeting ended.
Baraje, who read  a statement  after the meeting, said they agreed to merge in the interest of  Nigeria’s democracy.
The statement which was signed by Baraje and the APC Interim National Chairman, Chief  Akande, reads, “The  leadership of the APC and the New PDP met  this(Tuesday) morning at the residence of the Kano State Governor, Dr. Rabiu Kwakwanso, in Abuja.
“After exhaustive deliberation, we agreed to merge in order to rescue our fledgling democracy and the nation.”
• Aliyu, Lamido distance selves from merger
But shortly after,  Aliyu, a very vocal member of the G-7, added  a strange twist to the merger. His Chief Press Secretary, Danladi Ndayebo,  did not only deny that he attended  the meeting, he said the governor  remained a member of the PDP.
Ndayebo, in a statement,  said  Aliyu was  shocked that the merger was  announced   before a final decision on it was taken .
He argued that  since  reconciliatory  talks between President Goodluck Jonathan and the rebel governors  were still ongoing,  the merger ought not to have been announced.
Also, Lamido, who   said he remained  a member of the PDP,  added,   “I will not give anybody the pleasure of engaging me by his terms for now.”
In a  statement   by his Director of Press, Alhaji Umar Kiyari, the  governor  described himself as” the living father of the PDP.”
The statement reads,   “While I accept that my party, the PDP is currently embroiled in a serious crisis caused by   the Bamanga Tukur style of leadership, that does not necessitate me renouncing myself and relinquishing my historical authority to anybody.
“It is true that myself and my  family are currently under a huge political web and campaign of misinformation and smear to the extent that  we have been adjudged guilty in the public court by the gullible and the ill-informed, this will not intimidate or harass me out of the party.
“I will not give anybody the pleasure of engaging me by his terms for now, I wish to say that I remain the living father of the PDP. As for my political persecutors, I will engage them by my terms at the appropriate time. Nobody speaks for me but myself.”
• We’ve abandoned PDP’s sinking ship – Eze
In spite of the position of Aliyu and Lamido, the  New PDP  said  with  its merger with the APC,  the rank of governors in the PDP had further depleted.
In a  statement by its   National Publicity Secretary, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, the group  said a similar  situation  existed  in the National Assembly where the APC now had the majority.
It said, “Now, we have reached the stage that we can only say: ‘PDP, your sinking ship has been abandoned to you.’ You brought this misfortune upon yourself;  now, you must bear it alone.”
• It’s a welcome development
However, the  Presidency and the PDP said they were not worried by the development because the  rebel governors and their supporters   would come back to the PDP after 2015.
Gulak, who spoke for the Presidency, argued that with the development, the leadership of the  PDP would no longer be distracted from the task of building the party.
He added  that many members of the APC were already waiting for the rebel governors to take a final decision  before they  would  also declare for the PDP.
The Presidential aide  said, “I know as of a fact that five of them (the seven aggrieved governors) said they would now join APC; but I know two of them – governors of Niger and Jigawa states – issued statements, saying that they are not part of that(merger).
“I believe others, for a long time   have   not  had their hearts  in  the PDP.
“But it is good that they have told the world that they have taken a stand so that PDP will not be distracted; So that  we in the PDP,   will be focused to build our party.”
“A lot of people in the APC have contacted me several times that they want to come back to PDP; that they were just waiting for what happened today (Tuesday) to happen. And to us, it is a good development.”
On whether the Presidency was  not feeling threatened ahead of 2015, Gulak said, “We do  not feel threatened;  the PDP also  does not feel threatened. The PDP is the party to beat.”
Despite the rebel governors’ exit from the PDP however, the presidential aide did not completely rule out reconciliation.
He said the governors would always be welcomed back after they might have found out that life outside the PDP is empty.
“We are talking about peace; reconciliation is an ongoing process. If  they go outside there like those that went there before them and realise that the outside is empty, they are always welcome back home like we did before,” Gulak said.
Gulak had met behind closed doors with the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, before speaking with journalists.
Issues bordering on the development were said to have been discussed extensively at the meeting.
• Merger’ll fail –PDP
The  PDP, through its National Secretary, Prof. Adewale Oladipo,  described the rebel  governors’ action as a manifestation of the very fertile environment that “we as a party, have brought into the Nigerian political environment.”
He, however, predicted that the marriage between the aggrieved PDP governors and the APC would not last.
Oladipo said, “The allegiance between the splinter group and the APC will  not last and they will  return to the PDP before long.
“I am assuring you that after  May 29, 2015, many of these people will come knocking again, and like the democrats that we are, we will welcome them with open hands.’’
He however admitted that the last four months had been quite challenging for the party. He said   that President Goodluck Jonathan had effectively weathered the storm.
• Tinubu reacts
However,  Tinubu,  said the  rebel governors and leaders of the APC  and New PDP   were committed to the task of rescuing the country from  drifting.
He said, “Is a good rescue mission for our fledgling democracy. It is a must for the country, it is very necessary and we are happy about that.
“We are happy with the development; we have  the  commitment to rescue our country from drifting and we act as a group to promote the interest of this country.”
He said there was a possibility that more PDP  governors   would   join the APC.
Tinubu added,    “Why  not half more? why not 28 . Are you seeing the trend with which we are going?”
• Why Aliyu,   Lamido kicked
A highly placed source at the meeting said  that   Aliyu told the meeting that he would join the APC in  January and that it  was  better for his colleagues  to also discuss the mode of their  dumping the PDP together.
According the source , Aliyu was afraid that some influential persons in  Niger  State, could take over the structure of the PDP from him.
These influential persons  are believed     to have perfected their plan  to nominate  a retired colonel as PDP’s governorship candidate in  2015.
It was also gathered that Lamido   was already negotiating with the Presidency over the arrest of his two sons by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for alleged money laundering.
Their arrest  is said to be pulling the governor back in his move to defect from the PDP.
“I think this was why he was still foot dragging by saying we should meet with the President first,” our source added.
Ahmed, who   requested for  a meeting with the President before the final defection, was said to have no option than to  join his  godfather, Sen. Bukoka Saraki, who   was also at the meeting.
It was not clear while the governor wanted to be part of the meeting with the President. Another  sources said it was because of the  fear that he might not be  given   either the  APC ticket or that of the PDP  in the state during the 2015   election.
• How the deal was struck
Unknown to many,  the meeting was  not  free from disagreements as some of the aggrieved governors   did not buy the idea of them joining the APC at the moment.
Investigations showed that some of the  rebel governors  argued that the  New PDP  should meet  again after Tuesday’s meeting before taking a final decision  while others  advised that they should use the word “work together” with the APC in their  statements instead of “merger.”
At the end of the deliberations, Kwakwanso was said to have told his colleagues that those who wanted to defect now were free to do so while others were free to move next year or anytime they prefer.
However, majority of them   preferred immediate merger with the APC.
• Jonathan-rebel  govs meeting may not hold again
We however  gathered that   the  planned  meeting  between Jonathan and the   rebel  governors on Sunday might  no longer hold.
Investigations showed that the rebel governors were angry with the President over his refusal to meet with them last Sunday.
But the governors were said to have been angry that though the President claimed to be ill, he performed  state functions on Monday.
• Oshiomhole, Imoke meet Jonathan
Meanwhile, a few minutes after the aggrieved governors made their position known, Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, an APC governor, met briefly behind closed doors with Jonathan.
The meeting which was held inside the President’s office lasted about 20 minutes.
Oshiomhole declined to speak with journalists at the end of the meeting.
Shortly after he left, Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State also arrived at the Presidential Villa to meet with the President.
He was however directed to the President’s residence as he had left the office before the governor’s arrival.

Start a geniue business while FG is still waiting to pay the ASUU salary arrears

The President, Trade Union Congress, Mr. Boboi Kaigama
The President of the Trade Union Congress, Mr. Boboi Kaigama and the Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Chris Uyot,  on Monday,  called on the Federal Government to accede to the demand of striking university lecturers by paying their salary arrears from July to October, 2013.
Both Kaigama and Uyot, who spoke in different telephone interviews with our correspondent, said that the issue at stake was too serious for the government to endanger with a minor issue as  the withholding of the salaries of the striking lecturers.
Kaigama  said that the lecturers should have been paid their salaries as going on strike did not mean that they were no longer entitled to their salaries.
He explained that the union went on strike because the Federal Government failed to implement the 2009 agreement reached with the university lecturers.
He added that it was not the lecturers’ fault for embarking on the strike, saying the story would have been different if it was ASUU that violated the terms of the agreement.
He said, “It is okay, they are supposed to be paid their salaries;  when one is on strike, it does not mean that he cannot be paid his or her salary.
“They went on strike because of an agreement that was negotiated which the government has not been able to fulfill. The government should, pay them their salaries.  The situation would have been different if they were the ones that reneged on the agreement.”
On the issue of the insistence of the leadership of ASUU that the Federal Government must commence implementation of the fresh agreement with the union through the release of N100bn this year, he said that he did not see the government going back on the agreement.
He said that the TUC and the NLC would support ASUU to ensure the implementation of the last agreement as it was witnessed by him and the NLC President, Mr. Abdulwahed Omar.
“The NLC President Omar, and I are living witnesses to the final agreement that was reached between them and the government; we will support them based on what we witnessed, based on what they agreed with the government and the new implementation strategy.
“The  TUC and the NLC will back them to ensure that the implementation strategy is followed. An aspect will be implemented this year and the first quarter of next year,” he added
Kaigama said that while he wouldn’t speak for  ASUU, it was his conviction that they might have been waiting for an agreement to be signed before calling off the strike.
Speaking also, the Acting General Secretary of NLC, Uyot, said that the NLC was of the view that the Federal Government would not allow the issue of the outstanding salary arrears of ASUU members to disrupt its offer to the union.
Uyot said that it was unlikely that the Federal Government would allow such a “minor issue” to derail its discussions with the union considering the fact that both parties wanted the issue of the lingering strike to be resolved.
He stated also that while ASUU went on strike, the government couldn’t be exonerated from the industrial dispute having failed to implement the 2009 agreement reached with the university lecturers.
“Well, given the spirit of the discussions between ASUU and government officials led by President Goodluck Jonathan, the issue of non-payment of salaries, we do not think, is something the government might consider because the spirit was such that both parties particularly the government wanted resolved.
“So, we don’t think that a minute issue would derail the offer that the government has made.
“In any case both parties were involved in the strike. The union signed an agreement with the government which the government did not implement, so government cannot say that it was not part of the problem,” he said.

Oni, in his congratulatory message to HID on her 98th birthday on Monday, said, “Mama’s untiring efforts at building and sustaining the unity of the Yoruba nation and ensuring its worthy pride of place within the context of Nigeria’s federal structure is commendable.
“We are particularly happy that in spite of all challenges, mama has remained undaunted in her commitment to the unity and wellness of the Yoruba race.
“In critical moments, mama has never shied away from giving useful advice on the way forward for the country, not minding her age.”
He prayed for many more active years for her and congratulated the Awolowo family on the occasion of her 98th birthday.

“The attainment of this age by mama is no doubt a confirmation of the grace the almighty God has bestowed on her and it is my prayer that God will grant mama many more years in good health.
“She is a pride to us, the disciples of Baba Awolowo and the entire Yoruba race. I have no doubt in my mind that mama is more than a jewel to many of us and we shall continue to hold her in very high esteem.
